The New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show an amazing display of New York landmark replicas created out of plant materials and enlivened by model trains runs through January 10, 2010. Advance timed tickets may be purchased online at www.nybg.org.

 

 

 

 

 

On Sunday, December 20th at 4pm, the Sound Shore Chorale of New Rochelle along with Artistic Director, Richard Slade will present Handel’s Messiah Sing and Play Along at the Presbyterian Church of New Rochelle, 50 Pintard Avenue. The Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library’s Holiday Book Sale will be held on Dec. 11 and 12, from 9am to 3pm, in the library’s lobby. The sale will include a large and impressive assortment of gift books, at bargain prices. Also available for purchase at rock-bottom prices will be gift wrap, holiday cooking and craft books, sets of books, and other inexpensive items to help with holiday buying-needs.

 

 

Evening candlelight tours take place Dec. 12, 19, 26, at Van Cortlandt Manor and Sunnyside. Tours are offered from 4 to 8pm each evening and reservations are a must. For tickets call 631-8200 or online at www.hudsonvalley.org.

UPCOMING AND ONGOING
The City is now seeking nominations for the third annual New Rochelle Heritage Awards. This program celebrates and raises public awareness about historic properties and structures in the following categories: Residences older than 50 years that are significant to New Rochelle’s history; Public or quasi-public structures (e.g. house of worship, home of an organization) older than 50 years that are significant to New Rochelle’s history; Stellar restoration, residence; Stellar restoration, adaptive reuse; Home of nationally prominent individual; Significant architect or architectural style; and Landscape or landscape feature (e.g. cemeteries, stone walls, signs, excepting gardens.) Nominations may be submitted by individuals, organizations, businesses, or municipal representatives. Download details at www.noambramson.org. The deadline for nominations is January 8, 2010, with winners to be announced next spring.

The Goldstein Cancer Center at Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester now offers the American Cancer Society’s Look Good/Feel Better Workshop for women undergoing cancer treatment. The workshop meets the third Monday of each month, with the next one scheduled for December 21st. Registration is required by calling the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

The Friends of Hoff-Barthelson Music School will host their annual Holiday Music Festival at the Hoff-Barthelson Music School, 25 School Lane, Scarsdale, on December 5 and 6 from 10am to 4pm. The Preview Night will be held on December 4 at 7:30pm, wine and treats, jazz and a spectacular Live Auction will take place. For more information call 723-1169.

The Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage offices in Westchester County have teamed up with Verizon Wireless to collect old, no-longer-used cell phones for Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine® program. This collection has made it easy for community members to reduce waste and recycle, while also helping domestic violence survivors. Community members interested in donating used cell phones can do so at 1331A North Avenue, New Rochelle or other Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage offices, through December 30, 2009. At 2pm, the New Rochelle Public Library presents a special celebratory concert for the BID Family Day. The rockin’ group of the In-Laws and the Outlaws, four musicians spanning three generations, will perform music for Hanukkah and other global holidays, with songs of freedom from around the world. Sheila Dardashti, a New York City teacher and New Rochelle resident, and her son-in-law Roni Sarig, a writer and New Rochelle High School teacher, along with nine-year-old guitar-strumming Uri Sarig and six-year-old Raquel Sarig, sing songs from around the world – in a handful of languages and using a range of instruments, from the mandolin to the African drum. The free event is appropriate for all ages.

From 4 to 6pm, visit the Historic Sherwood House, 340 Tuckahoe Road, Yonkers for a Candlelight Tour and enjoy seasonal greenery, holiday cookies and hot cider. For more information call 961-8940.
