POSTED: DECEMBER 2011

At a recent luncheon at its White Plains Headquarters, Westchester Jewish Community Services WJCS) honored New Rochelle resident Connie Kennedy, founder of Back-to-School Clothes for Kids, which is marking its 25th anniversary. Since it began in 1986, Back to School has provided new clothes and backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 15,000 disadvantaged children in Westchester through the generosity of employees of local businesses as well as individual donors.

This year, nearly 60 Westchester corporations, organizations, clubs and individuals participated in the Back-to-School Clothes for Kids program helping more than 800 children and teens dress for school success. “Connie is proof that one person can make a difference,” said Meryl Lewis, WJCS Volunteer Resource Coordinator. “A germ of an idea she had in 1986 – providing new school clothes for children in need – has mushroomed into a movement that has significantly impacted thousands of children and families in need throughout Westchester.”
